Cost estimates are planning numbers, not quotes

The stump grinding cost calculator gives you a planning estimate based on formulas derived from published cost reports (Angi, HomeGuide, LawnLove, Fixr, BobVila, Homewyse) and the consensus pricing used by local tree services. It is not a quote. Actual cost varies with:

  • The crew's own overhead, fuel, insurance rates, and profit margin
  • Your specific market (metro versus rural, supply-demand after storm events)
  • Hidden obstacles, rocks, old fence posts, buried brick, concrete footings
  • Utility locates, permits, and access complications specific to your property
  • Season and demand cycle (prices rise 20 to 40 percent in storm-recovery windows)

Always get three local quotes

Use the calculator as a sanity check, not as a purchase decision. Call at least three local tree services with 50+ Google reviews, verify they carry a current Certificate of Insurance showing general liability and workers comp, and ask for a flat-rate bid (not hourly). Throw out the lowest and the highest. The middle number is your market.

Verify insurance before work starts

A stump grinder can throw rocks at high velocity and do serious damage to fences, vehicles, windows, and siding. Do not allow a crew on your property without a current COI in hand. The 3 minutes it takes to ask for and receive a COI email is the best insurance you have.

Not a substitute for an on-site bid

Nothing on this site replaces a walk-through bid from a licensed, insured local tree service. A good crew can spot things a calculator never will: surface roots you missed, a buried sprinkler line, a retaining wall that will collapse without careful root chasing. Use this tool to prepare, then let a pro confirm.

Call 811 before any dig

Before any grinding starts, call 811 for a free utility-locate. This is mandatory by federal law in most states and prevents hitting buried gas, electric, fiber, and water lines. call811.com.
